Secondo Denis Marion ( Écranfrançais” n. 1) “s'incominciò a girar il film nel giugno 1938, a Barcellona, in uno dei tre teatri di posa esistenti nella città”, ma con poco o nulla in fatto di materiale e attrezzature. “ Molti esterni furono girati sui campi d'aviazione, tra un bombardamento e l'altro. Splendide le scene dei combattimenti di strada, della colletta nel villaggio, del contadino che guida i bombardieri senza riconoscere dall’alto i paesaggi familiari. Nel 90 per cento del film,

interpretato in piena guerra civile da combattenti che ricostruivano quanto avevano vissuto, si sente il vero soffio della rivoluzione spagnola, che annuncia le battaglie antifasciste della seconda guerra mondiale. Le parti più discutibili sono i dialoghi degli aviatori che si chiedono reciprocamente le ragioni per cui combattono. Quando il film fu presentato al grande pubblico, un critico svizzero scrisse: “Il mondo s'è messo a rassomigliare ai romanzi di André Malraux”. Ma, dopo il 1945, l'autore smise di scrivere romanzi. È stato giustamente osservato che il film anticipa nello stile, la regia di Rossellini, di qualche anno posteriori.
