Identification of a woman

When Shoeshine opened in 1947 I went to see it alone after one of those terrible lover's quarrels.
I came out of the theater and walked up the street no longer certain whether my tears were for the tragedy on the screen or the hopelessness I felt for myself.
My identification with those two lost boys had become so strong.
Later, I learned that the man with whom I had quarreled had gone the same night and had also emerged in tears.
Yet our tears for each other did not bring us together.
 
Quando Shoeshine (Sciuscià) è apparso nelle sale nel 1947 sono andata a vederlo da sola, dopo una di quelle terribili liti tra innamorati.
Sono uscita dal cinema e ho camminato lungo la strada, non sono più sicura che le mie lacrime fossero per la tragedia sullo schermo o la disperazione che provavo per me stessa.
La mia identificazione con quei due ragazzi perduti era diventata così forte.
Più tardi, ho appreso che l'uomo con cui avevo litigato era andato la notte stessa a vederlo ed era anche scoppiato in lacrime.
Eppure le nostre reciproche lacrime non ci hanno unito.
